Daisy Tutorial

Posted September 3rd, 2012 in What's New

Happy September everyone! Not feeling it over here.  But we are going to the cardinal game on Saturday and my sister, aka the Skinny One tells me it’s going to be 77.  I’m so holding her to that.  And I’m bigger than her so she better be right!!  :)

Those of you that aren’t on FB are probably wondering what tutorial I’m going to do.  This weekend I decided to make a bag. I love making bags.  I rarely use them but I love, love, love to make them.  Soooo I made it and then posted it on FB.  Everyone seemed to like it so I said I’d be happy to do a tutorial. Doing a tutorial is so much easier for me than writing out the pattern.  I’d rather just show you how it’s done.  Sooooo here’s the bag we are going to be making. I did it in two sizes and really you can make yours in any size you want. Bigger or smaller. It’s easy!! I promise.  The kit is on my website and it is for the large size.  If you’ve already bought kits and several of you have, I’m putting them together now and just waiting for more black rick rack to arrive.  The first part of the tutorial we’ll do today.  Then I’ll move along and post again or just put it up on my website. www.daisycottagequilting.com  You can find the kit under KITS or JUST ADDED.  It’s called,  ”Halloween Tote”. I’m pretty clever aren’t I?  haaaa

Before I got on I have to let you know that the orange checked ribbon will not be in the kit.  I don’t have any or I’d be happy to share.  I just have enough for the first couple kits that were placed.  Everything else will be in the kit.

Ok, so here we go.  First things first to remember. ALWAYS use a 1/4inch seam allowance when piecing together your blocks. If your going to use 1/2″ it’s ok but make sure they are ALL 1/2″. If not your rows will NOT match up and your bag will looks funny. Haaa Ok, I’m kidding it wont look funny. Just crooked.

First thing we need is to cut some squares.  You’ll need a ruler and your rotary cutter.  Along with the mat.  We are going to cut 3″ squares.  And a lot of them. 84 for the large bag.  I used  40 for the smaller bag.  The smaller bag is what I was originally going for.  Somehow I ended up making a shopping tote.  But I love it!  And I will use it at the grocery store. Let me tell you the large one will end up being close to 19×16 when you lie it flat not counting the long handles.  The smaller one will be 12×11 not counting the handles.  Like I said before you can make it any size and really you can’t go wrong. You can even cut your squares larger or smaller. It’s up to you.  I just cut mine 3 inches.

So here you see me making the smaller one.  I’ll be giving you directions for the larger one though.  I just didn’t take pictures as I was making that one.   Let’s sew together our 3 inch squares into rows.  You’ll need 12 rows with 7 squares sewn together.

After you have all of your rows sewn together make sure you press them.  Then we are going to join together our rows.  We will be making a front and a back for our bag.  Remember this is the smaller bag. Here I have 5 squares sewn together but you are going to make yours bigger if your following the tutorial.   You need your rows to have 7 squares sewn together.  Then sew those together like I did below, but sew 6 rows together for your front and do the same for your back.  They should both be the same size when your done.

Keep adding until you have your size rows sewn together.  Twice! See my front and my back there?

I know I’m talking alot but I don’t want to leave anything out.

Next we’ll put our top row on the bag front and back.  I cut mine 4 inches by the size of your rows. Make sure you measure yours.  It might be different than mine depending on your seam allowance.  Cut two!  Then sew one to the top of your front and one to the top of your back.

Press the polka dotted top when your finished sewing.  This is what your front and your back should look like now.  Only bigger. Remember this is the small one.

Remember the kit is on the website under KITS. It’s called Halloween Tote.

Ok, I’m going to stop here and let you catch up.  I’ll post more tomorrow or the next day.  I’ll go ahead and send it in a newsletter. I apologize to anyone that isn’t going to follow along.  You can also look for the info on the Home page of the website.  I PUBLISH it once I send out the newsletter.  Any questions so far please let me know. You can call me,  636-273-5060 or email me, daisycottageqlt@gmail.com

One quick thing,  Vignette issue 8 has been delayed. Not sure why or what is going on. Just got an email from Leanne saying it was delayed. So that’s why I haven’t invoiced or charged anyone for it yet.  When I know more I’ll let you know more.  :)  Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for the tutorial! I am like you. Love to make bags but hardly ever use them. I LOVE the bigger one. I will make one for sure.
