I’m going to do this post in red because we’re doing the Valentine tutorial. So get your fabric out girls and get ready. Those of you that bought the kits….thank you, thank you, thank you. WOW I’m telling you I have the best customers out there. You guys are all wonderful. Ok so let’s get going on this.
Remember, all seams are 1/4″ on all that I do. At least that’s what I aim for. haaaa
Get your fabric pressed and that rotary cutter get a new blade in that baby so we can do some serious cutting. This is theone I did last year. So you can take a look here and get an idea of wher we’re going. It’s so easy and fun to make.
This is what we’ll be making this four heart block. And you will be making six of these for your tablerunner.
First thing I want you to do is cut your larger sashing strips off that white/polka dotted background.
Cut 4 strips the length of your fabric 2 1/2″ inches wide. Just put those aside until we’re finished with the blocks.
Grab the remaining white and pink polka dotted fabric which will be your background.
Cut 4 white 1- 1/2″ squares
Cut 4 1-1/2″ x 4-1/4″ strips. Remember your making one block with four hearts.
Cut 16 1 inch squares. You can cut them larger if you want. That will make your heart more defined. I did mine the 1 inch on my first block then changed it to 1 1/2″.
Now get out one of your fabrics for the hearts. Let’s make four hearts. Cut four 3 1/4 inch squares for four hearts. You will use one in each heart.
Cut 8 1 1/2″ x 3 1/4″ strips.
You need to also cut six 2 1/2 inch squares from your red fabric. One from each of the reds.
Take two of your 1″ or whatever size you decided upon square and place them on each corner of the 1 1 /2″x3 1/4″ strip. Your going to draw a diagonal line and sew on that line.
I don’t usually draw a line but you can or not. Sew right on that line. Do both sides of your piece of fabric.
You want to do this to two strips per heart. Each block has four hearts. Soooo you’ll need to do this 16 times. Makes sense???
Next trim away that part above your drawn/sewn line leaving a 1/4″ You can cut all of it away if you want. I sometimes leave the very back one just so I can square up my block. It’s up to you.
Now here we go. Let’s put one heart together. Take the two pieces that you sewed the corners to and one of your 1 1/2″ squares.
First do the top one…. then connect your square to the other piece.
The left side is sewn together. Now do the right pieces. Sew them together.
Are you having fun yet???? Sewing the right side together now.
Now let’s join these two pieces. That will be one of our four hearts. Remember you need four hearts for a block.
Sewing…………
Turn your head sideways………….are you turning?????? Is the blood rushing from your head and making your face turn red??? Oh where was I? Can you see the heart??? Only three more to go to get a complete block.
Here’s two of them.
Pretty cute so far huh? Make two more and we’re ready to finish one block.
Now we’re ready for the sashing to go between our hearts. Then we will have one completed block.
Take four of your 4 1/4″ x 2 1/2″ inch strips and one of your 2 1/2″ red squares. Sew them together just like the diagram shows. You’ll be sewing it in three different rows.
See I sewed the top row and the bottom row. Then the middle row.
Join them all together now.
Your three rows should look like this.
Now you want to join the three together. Attach your middle row to the bottom row.
Then add your top row to the bottom section now.
And this is what you get. Now do that five more times and you’ll have your six completed blocks. Pretty isn’t it? Now you know why I love RED.
I’ll let you make your blocks then Friday I’ll be back with the sashing instructions to put them all together. If by chance I made a mistake which is highly possible please please let me know so I can make corrections. Remember I’m not a pattern designer. Just trying to give you a free tutorial for a cute table runner.
I hope you enjoy!!!
Woohoo!!!! Let the heart making begin!
Very cool. I’m going to follow along even though I didn’t buy a kit.
I loved this and although I missed out on the fabric kit, I could still do one…Since I love red, my stash has a lot of it.
Mama Bear
CUTE!
What’s the finished size of this, Sharon? What about the size of the heart blocks?
Rachel,
I think most of mine turned out to be 8 3/4″ so I’d measure each block and cut them down to the same size. The finished size….Ill have to measure that. I’ll add it to my 2nd part tomorrow.
